On Saturday, September 1 the Grand Opera House, Paine Art Center and Gardens, and the Winnebago County Historical and Archaeological Society will collaborate for an evening of fashion and “Fashion in Film” as part of the monthly downtown Oshkosh Gallery Walk.
The occasion marks the first time the historic Grand Opera House will host an art exhibit in conjunction with the monthly Gallery Walk.
From 6 to 8 p.m. visitors to the Grand stage, 100 High Avenue, will enjoy fashion excellence from the 1950’s and 60’s as creations by Oshkosh’s George Procknow will be on display. A follow up to the highly regarded “Originals by George” fashion show, which was held at the Grand in March, this exhibit will provide an up close look at some of the gowns, dresses and fashion accessories that shaped the fashion tastes of a generation of Fox Valley women.
The art of fashion is also being highlighted at the Paine Art Center and Gardens this summer through the exhibition “Fashion in Film: Period Costumes for the Screen.” Closing Sept. 30, the exhibition features 36 period costumes worn by movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Meryl Streep, and Gwyneth Paltrow from critically acclaimed films such as “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Titanic.” The Grand will host a special screening of Titanic beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is $4 per person.
The Grand has been looking for an opportunity to get involved in the monthly Gallery Walk, said executive director Joseph A. Ferlo. The popularity of both the Historical Society’s fashion show Paine’s summer exhibit, as well as the rare Saturday night without a scheduled performance at the Grand, made this collaboration of art, fashion, film and history a natural one, he said.
“Titanic” is being shown through the generous support of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Department of Continuing Education and Extension.
